In recent years, he’d also found a second creative outlet in painting, something his family specifically pointed to when they announced his passing, describing his art as one of the purest reflections of who he was.
A Sudden Loss
Brendon died in his sleep on March 20, 2026, at age 54. His family confirmed the cause as natural, tied to a heart condition he’d been diagnosed with in 2022 after a cardiac hospitalization.
In their statement, they acknowledged that he’d faced struggles earlier in his life, but said he was on treatment for his diagnosis and optimistic about what was ahead. They asked for privacy to grieve and to, in their words, celebrate a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.
How the Buffy Family Remembered Him
The tributes that followed said as much about Brendon as any career summary could.
Sarah Michelle Gellar quoted one of Xander’s own lines back to him, about being the one who sees everything without ever stepping into the spotlight, and told him she’d seen him all along. Alyson Hannigan thanked him for years of laughter and Dodgers games. David Boreanaz put it simply: there are people you work with, and there are people you share time with, and Nick was the latter.
His death came just over a year after the cast had already lost Michelle Trachtenberg, making it the second loss for a group that, as more than one castmate put it, had genuinely grown up together.
