Katie Maloney was one of the original “Vanderpump Rules” cast members back in 2013, a fan favorite to some and a “mean girl” to plenty of others over the years. On “House of Stassi,” viewers are noticing a genuinely different version of her, calmer and more grounded than the reputation she built on VPR.
A Life Built Before Reality TV
Maloney was born January 16, 1987, in Park City, Utah, and moved to California chasing an acting career, landing early roles in web series like “2009: A True Story” and “Harper’s Globe” before reality TV changed the direction of her career entirely.
She started dating fellow future VPR cast member Tom Schwartz in 2011, and their relationship became one of the show’s longest-running storylines, culminating in a televised 2016 wedding that turned out not to be legally binding, followed by an actual legal marriage in 2019, and a divorce finalized in October 2022.
The Original Cast Member With a Complicated Reputation
Maloney has been part of this world longer than almost anyone else in it, appearing on “Vanderpump Rules” from its 2013 premiere all the way through its final seasons. But longevity on the show came with real baggage: for years, she was one of the cast members most frequently called out by fans for catty, mean-girl behavior, quick to pile on castmates and slow to take accountability for her own part in the group’s endless cycles of drama.
The Accident That Fans Don’t Always Know About
Part of what makes Maloney’s current calm feel earned rather than just a personality shift is something that predates “Vanderpump Rules” entirely.
In November 2009, shortly after she’d started working at SUR, Maloney fell through a skylight at a rooftop party, plunging nearly three stories and hitting a staircase on the way down. She came out of it with a broken jaw, a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, and a traumatic brain injury, and had her jaw wired shut for weeks while she healed.
Maloney has said the physical recovery was, in a lot of ways, the easier part. She’s spoken candidly about how a brain injury can quietly reshape mood, personality, and temper in ways that took her years to fully understand, describing a shorter fuse and a stretch of not feeling like herself afterward.
She’s chosen not to have the scar on her chin fully removed, calling it a badge of honor rather than something to erase.
Building a Life Outside the Franchise
Since the divorce, Maloney has spent real time building things that exist independently of any show. She launched her own beauty and lifestyle brand, Pucker & Pout, co-owns the sandwich shop Something About Her with fellow VPR alum Ariana Madix, and co-hosts the podcast “Disrespectfully” with Dayna Kathan.
Both of her closest current relationships follow her onto “House of Stassi,” too. Madix appears at the sandwich shop alongside Maloney, and Kathan shows up with her on group outings throughout the season, giving the show a real sense of Maloney’s actual current life rather than just recycling old VPR castmates for the sake of it.
A New Relationship, Also Along for the Ride
Maloney’s first public relationship since her divorce is part of the season too. She’s been dating Nick Martin, guitarist for the band “Sleeping With Sirens,” since October 2024, after the two initially became friends, met for coffee while he was going through his own divorce, and eventually reconnected once both were single.
Their first kiss happened right before one of his tours in 2024, and they made things official two weeks later.
Maloney has described him as the most wonderful person she’s ever met and specifically asked him to be part of “House of Stassi” so the show could reflect her actual life rather than an edited version of it.
By her account, he was an enthusiastic, willing participant, showing up for emotional, mental, and physical support throughout filming, a notably different dynamic than what audiences watched her navigate with Tom Schwartz for over a decade.
The Callout That Set the Tone for Her Season
Earlier in the season, before any of the group confrontations, Maloney sits down with Stassi one-on-one and tells her directly that her world has gotten smaller and smaller, to the point where the only people who make the cut are the ones who came out of her, are married to her, or are on her payroll.
It’s a blunt, uncomfortable thing to say to someone’s face, and it visibly rattles Stassi in the moment.
The comment doesn’t just land on Stassi, though, it also creates real friction with Kristina Kelly and Taylor Strecker, who take real issue with the implication that their closeness with Stassi is transactional rather than genuine.
Maloney explained the line was hyperbole, not a jab at anyone specific, meant to capture how left out of Stassi’s life she’d genuinely started to feel rather than to question anyone else’s friendship.
That willingness to clarify instead of getting defensive is part of the same pattern that earns her praise all season.
Why Fans Are Seeing Her Differently Now

That old reputation isn’t what’s showing up on screen here.
Viewers who spent years frustrated with Maloney’s meaner intincts on VPR are specifically praising how calm and drama-free she reads by comparison, a real shift rather than just a change of scenery.
Whether that’s actual personal growth in the years since her accident and divorce, or simply what she looks like once she’s no longer competing for screen time in a cast built to manufacture conflict, it’s landing as one of the more unexpected redemption arcs of the show.
The Architect of the Season’s Biggest Blowup
That said, the softer read doesn’t mean she stays out of things. Maloney is the one who organizes the finale’s friend-tervention confronting Stassi and Beau’s marriage, a move Stassi has since said came from a genuine place rather than any desire to embarrass her, drawing on Maloney’s own marriage to Schwartz and the resentment she recognized in Beau.
It’s a notably different kind of conflict than what she was known for on Vanderpump Rules, less catty, more deliberate, which may be exactly why fans are giving her credit this time instead of piling on.
