AD Smith and Ollie Sutherland: The True ‘Perfect Match’ of Season 3

AD Smith and Ollie Sutherland didn’t need another televised heartbreak.

Both had already done the experiment. They both had already said yes to someone who ultimately said no, and they both walked into “Perfect Match” Season 3 carrying that weight.

AD, known as Amber Desiree Smith, appeared on “Love Is Blind” Season 6 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She and Clay Gravesande got engaged in the pods, navigated the full process, and arrived at the altar — where AD said “I do” and Clay said “I don’t.” The way she handled that moment in real time — composed, dignified, not a single ounce of crumbling — became one of the franchise’s most praised exits. She left the altar alone and left with the audience’s full respect.

Ollie Sutherland, from Hampshire, England, appeared on “Love Is Blind UK” Season 1. He got engaged to Demi Brown. They didn’t go through with the wedding. Unlike AD’s ending, theirs was relatively clean — they remained on good terms and were friendly at the reunion. Still, Ollie had done the experiment, reached the altar, and come home single.

Both of them knew, better than almost anyone else in the “Perfect Match” Season 3 villa, exactly what it felt like when the format worked against you.

Day One: Tunnel Vision

The moment Ollie walked into the Tulum villa, he said in confessional: “It sounds really cliché, but it’s like everyone else became a little bit invisible, and I just had tunnel vision on her. AD’s just got this crazy, fiery sex appeal. The moment I saw her, I said, ‘That’s a problem right there.’ My favorite type of problem, though.”

He had come in planning to keep his feelings out of it. “My plan was just to find the baddest girl in here, match up with her, keep my feelings out of it, and head for the finish line,” he admitted. AD dismantled that plan within the first few hours.

They paired up for the first challenge — a sex position demonstration that ended in a steamy kiss — and agreed to match for the evening. By day two, AD was describing their physical chemistry as “insane” and noting that he matched her vibe. Ollie, by his own admission, had not anticipated leaving the villa with a fiancée. He said so explicitly. “That is testimony to our relationship even more so,” he said later.

The Complications

The villa didn’t make it easy. It never does.

In Episode 5, AD was shockingly eliminated — forced out of the competition and separated from Ollie mid-season. Ollie’s response was immediate and unguarded. “I’m not in a good place right now. She’s my best friend, like, that’s my girl. I don’t want to see her go, and my heart’s breaking for her.” He had to pair with another contestant, Justine Nbiba, to stay in the game.

When AD returned for the mixer in Episode 6, she discovered Ollie had kissed Justine and had not told her. AD confronted him. She chose to forgive him. The decision was not naive — it was considered. She had already done the work of understanding the difference between a man who makes a mistake and a man who makes a pattern.

Throughout the boardroom sessions and compatibility challenges, Ollie found Alex attractive when she was brought in as a date option but said she was unable to tempt him away from AD. He and AD ranked each other highest in the blindfolded kissing challenge. The through-line held, even under pressure.

The Finale — And the Runners-Up Reveal

By the finale, five couples remained: Lucy and Daniel, AD and Ollie, Sandy and Louis, Madison and Freddie, and Rachel and Ray. AD and Ollie advanced through the final compatibility challenge alongside Lucy and Daniel. When the cast voted, the result was Lucy and Daniel as Season 3 winners. AD and Ollie were runners-up.

In a season that would ultimately produce exactly one lasting relationship — theirs — coming second was the better outcome.

After filming wrapped in September 2024, AD and Ollie kept their relationship largely private. Fans noticed AD spending significant time in London and Europe throughout the fall. The speculation built quietly.

Then, at the “Love Is Blind” Season 8 reunion in April 2025 — five months before their “Perfect Match” season even aired — Ollie got down on one knee on a beach in front of candles and roses. “You’re my best friend. You’re the love of my life. I’ve never felt as happy or as complete as I have since I met you, and nothing would make me happier than to spend the rest of my life loving you. Amber Desiree Smith, will you marry me?”

She said yes.

Ollie reflected on the depth of what had built between them: “Even as early on as when we were on ‘Perfect Match,’ I noticed that we were having the deeper conversations, the more important conversations, talking about shared values and similar outlooks on life. I think that really laid the groundwork and the foundation for the beautiful relationship we have now.”

Until he met AD, Ollie said he had “never entertained” the idea of long-distance. “It just goes to show that when someone comes along that blows your mind, you end up breaking the rules.”

Two months after the engagement announcement, in May 2025, AD and Ollie revealed they were expecting their first child — a girl — in a black-and-white video set to Monica’s “Angel of Mine.”

“I’m so blessed, and I get to do this with such an amazing partner,” AD said in a July 2025 interview. “We’re on this journey together, and we’re just so excited about our little girl.”

Their daughter arrived in January 2026. They married in Beverly Hills on October 26, 2025 — and went to McDonald’s after the ceremony, which is the most unself-conscious, genuinely happy thing a newly married couple has done on the Reality TV circuit in recent memory. They are planning a second ceremony in the UK.

Every other couple from Perfect Match Season 3’s final five split. The winners broke up within weeks. The runners-up got engaged, had a baby, and got married — in that order, before their season even aired.

AD had already stood at one altar and been left. Ollie had already reached the end of an experiment and come home without a ring on his finger. They were both people who understood what it felt like when the format’s promise did not deliver.

The difference, this time, was that it did. Not because the cameras were watching, but despite them. They built something in three weeks in Tulum that held up through long-distance, a pregnancy, a wedding, and a baby — all while their origin story was still sitting in a Netflix editing room waiting to air.

That is what the experiment is supposed to produce. In Season 3, it produced exactly one of those. They just happened to come second.

“Perfect Match” Seasons 1 through 3 are streaming now on Netflix.
“Perfect Match” Season 4 premieres May 13, only on Netflix.
